We’ve tried to make the Gaming Baseball as flawless, durable and easy-to-use as possible, but we know there’s always the possibility of a hiccup. We’ve put together this comprehensive page of FAQs and troubleshooting tips to help you get back to the ballfield in no time.
Is there a subscription fee for the app?
The Backyard League app is free and easy to use. There are no in-app purchases, subscriptions, or ads, and no personal data is collected or disclosed. The app is designed to be a safe environment for young players to have fun and play together.
So it's a smart baseball, not a gaming device?
It's the best of both worlds! While there are some smart baseballs out there, they are focused on performance improvements for the best players. We have designed the Gaming Baseball to be a gaming device that’s connected to your phone and with which you can play a wide variety of throw and catch games. Think of it as an arcade game that you play anywhere with a ball that feels just like a traditional baseball and that builds core ball and glove skills, while you have a blast :)
Is the weight and balance the same as a standard baseball?
The ball is produced to be within regulation size and weight. Feedback from players is that it feels just like a normal baseball. Out of the box, the ball feels like a fresh baseball. Through play, it gets better and better.
Is it really durable?
We have been developing this technology since 2016 and launched our first smart ball in 2018. We have continued to improve the technology based on thousands of players’ feedback and millions of throws. The Gaming Baseball is extremely durable, but there is a 12 month warranty, if it happens to break.
Can you hit the Gaming Baseball with a bat?
No. The technology within the Gaming Baseball cannot withstand the force of a bat. The impact of a bat generates immense force, up to 8000 pounds. The Gaming Baseball is a highly durable ball for playing catch and a variety of fielding games. It is tested to withstand the impact of throws against concrete. So even though it cannot be used for batting practice, the Gaming Baseball can still take a beating.
Battery life? Warranty? Charge time?
The Gaming Baseball uses a standard CR2032 battery, which is included with the purchase of the ball. The battery lasts for up to 40,000 throws (that’s a lot!). We have implemented smart power management and autosleep, so you cannot forget to turn it off and run out of power. The battery is safely secured in the impact core of the ball, but there is a 12-month product warranty if it stops working.
What is the age recommendation?
Our goal has been to make a product that is great for ages 6 and up. The Backyard League games are designed to be fun and motivational for all players, young and old. Playing catch and getting live feedback and scoring after each round is very motivating and engaging. It quickly builds more confidence in throwing and catching in young players and inspires more focus and intensity with every round. One of the most important things when playing with a young player is to look at the results after each game and pick one area to improve. All in all, it is great fun for anyone who loves baseball and also loves competition, regardless of age.
Does it measure velocity and distance thrown?
The games in Backyard League use ball speed and distance as part of challenge. The accuracy of these measurements is approx +/- 5% up to 50mph. This is less accurate than radar or video-based speed measurements. But it is quite consistent comparing throws from player to player and that makes it accurate for our games. We have the ability to train the ball with pitches from more players, so let us know if the speed measurements feel wrong and we can update the ball from the app.
What is the actual competition?
The Gaming Baseball is designed for catch and fielding-based games. Play against competitors around the world or try to beat your best score. Check out the Games page for descriptions of all the games. In the app, there is a game intro video that accompanies each game and explains the rules.
Will this work solo throwing into a net?
Of course. Right now we do not have a game for that, but we will look into it!
Where is the ball made?
The Backyard League started in Oslo, Norway. The technology core is produced at our factory in Norway. The Gaming Ball is designed and tested in Norway and is produced by our partner in China. It meets all quality and safety standards.
Do you make a regulation 12” softball?
We are focused on introducing the Gaming Baseball now, but plan to work on a softball version soon.
